How eBay's final value fee works (2026)
eBay's final value fee applies to the total amount of the sale — that's the item price plus whatever you charged the buyer for shipping. For most categories in 2026, the rate is 12.9% + $0.30 per order. Some categories are different:
- Trading cards: 7.35% (lower to keep collectors happy)
- Coins & precious metals: 3% (ultra low for bullion dealers)
- Athletic shoes over $150: 14.55% (flipper tax)
- Books, movies, music, DVDs: 15.35% (media category)

The profit math most flippers get wrong
Here's the mistake: sellers look at the sold price, subtract what they paid, and call the difference "profit." That's gross margin, not profit. Real profit after eBay takes its cut looks like this:
Profit = Sold Price + Shipping Charged − Item Cost − Actual Shipping Cost − Final Value Fee − Promoted Listing Fee
For a $45 item that cost you $5, with free shipping to the buyer and $6 actual postage and a 2% promoted ad:
- Sold: $45.00
- Cost: −$5.00
- Shipping you paid: −$6.00
- eBay final value fee (12.9% of $45 + $0.30): −$6.11
- Promoted listing fee (2% of $45): −$0.90
- Real profit: $26.99
That's a 60% margin — not the 89% your gut was telling you based on "$45 minus $5."
Why most eBay sellers over-estimate profit
- Forgetting shipping is a cost. "Free shipping" isn't free for you — you pay the carrier.
- Forgetting the $0.30 flat per-order fee. Adds up on low-priced items. On a $10 sale, that's 3% extra.
- Forgetting promoted listings. If you use Promoted Listings Standard, you're paying an extra 2-15% on sales that come from ads.
- Not tracking category differences. Media items give up 15.35% to eBay, not 12.9%.
